Physical Disability & Children

How to Include children who experience a physical disability into the classroom:

Three basic principles:

When teaching a child who experiences a physical disability one needs to consider these three basic principles:

1

Include other experts who can help assist the child in the classroom such as the student’s parents, other school personnel and other health related professions, as well as the students classmates.

2

When planning be flexible. Be willing to make last minute changes

3.

When planning the lessons be creative in the method and approach that is used. Help every child realise their strengths and help them build on their weakness.

Suggestions:

The following suggestions will help you integrate and accommodate
children who experience a physical disability into your classroom:

Adapt the environment to suit the child’s disability . For example arrange the tables and chairs so that the child has easy access.

Ensure that the child has an appropriate work area and the materials are easily available.

Consider the child’s disability when planning the lesson. If the child is unable to use their hands allow the child to record the information on a tape recorder.

Children who are in wheelchairs are capable of doing many things. They are in the wheelchair in order to allow them the freedom to participate in the activities. Being in a wheelchair does not mean that the child cannot learn like other children. The child can if you give them the opportunity.

Remember every child that is in a wheelchair longs to be treated like any other child. Do not lower the expectation of the child just because he/she is in wheelchair.

The materials should be of an adequate size so the child is able to work.

Pair the child up with a buddy so that he/she can help assist the child during the lessons and activities. It helps the child with the disability achieve the task but it also develops the buddies confidence having the opportunity to teach his/her friend.

Ensure that enough time is provided for the child to complete his/her tasks.

Develop a positive attitude in the child by giving the child opportunities to realise his/her strengths.

When doing physical education always make sure that the child who experiences a physical disability is included. For example have a wheelchair race or throw and catch competition

Be consistent and keep to routine. The child will then know what is expected of him/her for the day which will therefore create security.

Teach children about tolerance and respect.
